Role of Coral Reefs

Among the many organisms that play a vital role in maintaining marine ecosystems, colorful corals are one of them.
Corals absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, creating a sea where creatures can live comfortably.

Current Status of Coral Reefs

In recent years, due to the effects of global warming, coral bleaching—the whitening of corals—has accelerated, and corals are disappearing at an unprecedented scale and speed.
Sea temperatures are rising due to global warming.

As habitats disappear, marine life also vanishes. Bleached corals Corals turn white when they lose the symbiotic algae they live with, and eventually die.

Let's All Protect Our Coral Reefs!

Coral is a vital organism that provides homes for marine life.
Taiyo Nippon Sanso supports activities to protect coral reefs in order to preserve clean seas for future generations.

Initiative (1)

Participating as a member company in "Team TYURA SANGO."

In February 2025, Taiyo Nippon Sanso participated in "Team TYURA SANGO" to protect the beautiful coral reef sea at Onna Village, Okinawa. This Team is working to protect Okinawa's coral reefs. Employees of participating companies can join this activity and experience tasks, such as cultivating coral seedlings, planting underwater, and observing corals. Through these experiences, participants can learn about the role of coral in protecting marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting coral.
Our company offers employees the opportunity to visit Okinawa, see coral reefs in person, and take part in coral planting activities. We hope this experience inspires them to consider the future of these reefs and their inhabitants. Over 20 employees and their families participated in this initiative in its first year, which began in 2025. We will continue encouraging our employees to participate in coral conservation activities.

What is “Team TYURA SANGO”?

In 2004, companies from within and outside Okinawa Prefecture came together to form "Team TYURA SANGO." The purpose of our activities is to spread the spirit of cherishing Okinawa's beautiful sea, the “churaumi,” to more people. This Team plants coral seedlings in the sea to protect the coral reefs and holds events to raise awareness about coral cultivation activities and the sea. To date, approximately 19,500 coral seedlings have been planted in the sea.

Participation in the Coral Project at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST)

In July 2024, Nippon Sanso Holdings, our parent company, supported the philosophy of OIST Coral Project, a university-led initiative dedicated to coral conservation in Okinawa and globally, and joined the project as a Special Partner. OIST is engaged in activities to protect coral while surveying it using the latest methods. Through such research, OIST supports activities to protect coral reefs, not only in Okinawa, but around the world.

What is OIST Coral Project?

OIST uses special methods necessary for examining the genes of creatures in seawater and closely investigating the blueprints within genes to protect coral and marine life.
