There are many fans of his unique way of speaking – said by some even to be “outspoken” – and the lectures held in various parts of the country are very popular. He was given an award for a lifetime of excellence in sports by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2006, and received the foreign minister’s commendation in 2013 because of the positive reception of the “popularization of soccer in Japan”. He also received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays in spring 2017. He is from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
