Key Initiatives Aimed at Contributing to a Sustainable Society

Promoting the widespread use of renewable fuels

Promoting the widespread use of renewable fuels

Many of the key environmental challenges facing the world today are related to resources and energy. Reducing the impact of energy use on the environment and lowering carbon emissions demands the development of clean, renewable alternatives to fossil fuel. Our long-standing participation in a national project aimed at establishing a filling infrastructure for hydrogen, a renewable fuel viewed as a particularly promising choice, has yielded numerous achievements, including the development of commercially viable filling stations.

Supporting advanced electronics industries

Supporting the electronics industry of tomorrow

Compound semiconductors are used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for mobile phones and vehicle navigation systems, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used in lighting fixtures and other electronics products essential to modern lives. We began developing metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) equipment, crucial to the production of compound semiconductors, more than two decades ago. In addition to capitalizing on advanced gas handling and ultrahigh vacuum technologies perfected over the years, which has facilitated the fully integrated production of MOCVD equipment, we continue to develop cutting-edge technologies that accommodate increasingly sophisticated semiconductor fabrication processes.

Contributing to space exploration

Before they are launched into space, satellites undergo extensive testing in space simulation chambers, which use gas to replicate the extreme environment of outer space. We manufacture a diverse range of space simulation chambers, from compact chambers used in laboratories to some of the largest used in Japan. Taiyo Nippon Sanso technologies were used in the testing of Japan’s renowned Hayabusa asteroid explorer, which brought samples of material from an asteroid back to Earth.

Assisting in the early detection of cancer

Assisting in the early detection of cancer

Positron emission tomography (PET), a diagnostic imaging technique that facilitates the prompt detection of cancer with no pain or side effects, has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years. Applications for PET are expected to expand worldwide in the years ahead, underscored by its increasing use in the diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease. As Japan’s only manufacturer of Water-18O, a starting material for diagnostic agents used in PET, we are striving to ensure stable supplies of this essential item.

Helping home healthcare service providers enhance quality of life

Helping home healthcare service providers enhance quality of life

One of our principal home healthcare businesses is the provision of equipment for home oxygen therapy (HOT). Used by individuals with lung problems that prevent them from taking in enough oxygen naturally, HOT services involve the use of HOT devices and oxygen cylinders in the comfort of the patient’s own home, which greatly enhances quality of life and is a significant improvement over conventional oxygen therapy, which requires extended hospitalization.

Subsidiary Thermos K.K. is recognized as a pioneer in the stainless steel vacuum bottle industry. Leveraging its outstanding vacuum insulation and metal processing technologies, Thermos developed a stainless steel vacuum bottle, revolutionizing a market previously dominated by glass-lined models, by developing a 100% stainless steel vacuum bottle. Thermos has since capitalized on its technological prowess to develop a wide range of other products that offer attractive and ecologically sound lifestyle concepts. These include the Shuttle Chef series of thermal cooking pots, which reduce the time and effort used in cooking, and other vacuum insulated food containers designed to keep contents hot and fresh tasting.
