It is now more important than ever for corporations to fulfill their social responsibility and actively pursue goals that contribute to environmental preservation. We at Taiyo Nippon Sanso believe that we must move beyond mere compliance with regulations and that we must totally integrate the fundamentals governing the environment, safety, and quality assurance into our management policy. By doing so, we will earn the trust of society at large.
In February 2005 the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change took effect and signatory countries finally embarked on serious measures to reduce greenhouses gasses. These efforts have just begun, but we must face the challenge of a fundamental shift away from the current paradigm of mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal under which our society currently operates if we wish to make it a sustainable one. To this end we have set aggressive goals for the year 2010, including reduction of energy used at gas production plants, fuel savings in tanker transport, and the recycling of industrial waste. We are also developing environmental technologies such as gas control technology that will help create products which have less impact on the environment.
This Environmental and Social Report will outline both our environmental and our social activities. The current Taiyo Nippon Sanso was born of a merger in October 2004, a new beginning that gives us an opportunity to implant social responsibility into our core corporate ethics and behavioral guidelines. We intend to devote the full energies of the company toward even more enhanced reporting of our activities in the future.
It is our hope this report will fully explain our environmental and social activities and allow a frank exchange of views as we go forward.
