Risk Management

We at Taiyo Nippon Sanso believe that “Selling gas is selling safety,” so we worked toward early implementation of a safety management system. However, new risks were starting to appear in areas of product quality and safety, environmental friendliness, and management of intellectual property.
Given such circumstances, in 2006 we determined “safety management,” “product quality and safety” and “environmental friendliness” as our group’s priority areas in risk management efforts. Then we established the “Regulations on Managing Technological Risks,” with the Technology Division assuming responsibility for controlling these risks.
And in the process of establishing these regulations, we also clearly set up our risk management system by positioning the Technological Risk Management Committee, which was launched in 2004, as the highest deliberative body for technological risks.
Furthermore, we also established a corporate system that enables the management to comprehensively manage these risks through regular feedback of related developments and via the Technological Risk Management Committee.
The first committee meeting was held in April 2004. Since then this meeting has been held every year in February to discuss and decide our comprehensive risk management guidelines and key challenges in the next fiscal year.

1. Technological Risk Management Committee
As the highest deliberative body for risk management, the Technological Risk Management Committee debates risk management policy for the group as a whole in order to ensure that risk management is pursued in a consistent manner throughout the entire group. It supervises and brings together four subcommittees while clarifying the goals of top management and setting forth policies as well as crucial challenges for each fiscal year. Chaired by the president, this committee is also composed of ranking members of the three committees and ranking members of major affiliated companies.

2. Environmental and Safety Management Committees
Environment management and safety management are both integral aspects of Taiyo Nippon Sanso’s core business. The Technology Division Director chairs both the Environmental Committee and the Security Management Committee. These committees deliberate how to enact and promote resolutions made by the Technological Risk Management Committee.

3. Quality and Product Safety Management Committee
Quality management and product safety management are both integral to product risk management. The Quality and Product Safety Management Committee chaired by the Technology Division Director deliberate how to enact and promote resolutions made by the Technological Risk Management Committee.

4. Intellectual Property Management Committee
In addition to traditional IP concerns such as patents, utility models, copyright, and trademarks, the Intellectual Property Management Committee also handles issues related to strengthening protection for trade secrets and other contemporary IP-related issues. Chaired by the Technology Division Director, the committee deliberates how to enact and promote resolutions made by the Technological Risk Management Committee.
