Promoting Resource Conservation and Recycling

In its efforts to preserve the environment and conserve resources, Taiyo Nippon Sanso has been promoting resource saving and recycling based on the so-called 3R principles – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – that aim to mitigate the swelling burden on the environment caused by waste. The Company is also actively adopting measures aimed at processing its products after they have been used.

Recycling and managing industrial wastes

To mitigate the growing environmental burden caused by waste, Taiyo Nippon Sanso is striving to save resources, recycle, and adopt proper management procedures. The main components of industrial waste including recycled quantities generated by the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Group involve waste metal and waste plastics. The waste metal is thoroughly separated and recycled.
As a company that inevitably produces emissions, Taiyo Nippon Sanso strictly manages industrial waste to ensure that it is properly disposed of.

Main Initiatives

  • Thoroughly separate waste.
  • Search for routes where recycling is possible.
  • Thoroughly check manifest recovery.

Targets and Progress

Target: Raise the recycling ratio to 80% by FY2010
FY2004 progress: Recycling ratio of 52.8%
Scope of tabulation: All work locations

Promoting the recycling of resources

Taiyo Nippon Sanso actively recycles resources such as cans, glass bottles, plastic PET bottles, and paper products (newspapers, magazines, and cardboard). Since all work locations have already achieved a recycling ratio of 100%, Taiyo Nippon Sanso is focusing on ensuring that these activities are ongoing and has not set any medium or long-term goals.

Main Initiatives

  • Collect and separate internal documents, newspapers, catalogs, and magazines for reuse as a resource for recycled paper products.
  • Recycle cardboard.
  • Collect and separate empty cans, glass bottles, and PET bottles.
  • Display posters that stimulate awareness.

Targets and Progress

Target: Achieve a recycling ratio of 100%
FY2004 progress: Recycling ratio of 100%

Reducing the quantity of paper used in the office

Taiyo Nippon Sanso is working hard to reduce the quantity of paper used by office equipment such as printers, copiers, and facsimiles. The Company is strengthening its efforts to further minimize the use of paper in its offices.

Target: Achieve a 5% reduction in the quantity used by FY2010
FY2004 progress: Quantity reduced by 0.8%
Note: Compared to figures for FY2000

Recycling gas detoxifying agents

In the process of manufacturing semiconductors, adsorption agents are used by non-gas treatment equipment to detoxify gases that are emitted as a result of the gases used in the manufacturing process. The adsorbent agent used is either a dry or a semi-dry type, depending on the target gas. Taiyo Nippon Sanso strives to properly manage these agents by establishing routes for recovery and treatment.
As the performance of the detoxifying agents themselves is increasingly being enhanced and the concentration of arsenic in the spent agents is rising, recycling is becoming more difficult. Therefore, taking into consideration the treatment capabilities of recycling businesses, Taiyo Nippon Sanso has set a new goal from FY2005 aimed at recycling 70% of dry-type detoxifying agents by FY2010.

Main Initiatives

  • Establish routes for recovering and processing detoxifying agents.

Targets and Progress

Initial target: Achieve a recycling ratio of 100% by FY2010
FY2004 progress: Recycling ratio of 63.7%
New target: Achieve a recycling ratio of 70% by FY2010

Promoting 'green' purchases of office supplies

Taiyo Nippon Sanso employs a system whereby the various divisions of the Company order their own office supplies directly over the Internet. In this system, standard Company supplies are registered and prioritized, and the divisions select their purchases from the standard items wherever possible. Priority is given to the purchase of items bearing the “Eco Product” logo mark so that by purchasing these products, Taiyo Nippon Sanso can further contribute to environmental preservation and resource conservation.

Main Initiatives

  • Stimulate awareness within the Company.
  • Give priority to “green” products in purchase decisions.
  • Register these eco-conscious products.

Targets and Progress

Target: Achieve a “green” purchase ratio of 70% by FY2010
FY2004 progress: “Green” purchase ratio of 42.0%
Scope of tabulation: All work locations
