Environmental Management System

Based on our Environmental Management Regulations, the Environmental Committee meets once yearly and is chaired by the Director for the Environment. We have also convened the Environmental Technology Development Subcommittee and the Energy Conservation Subcommittee to tackle particular key environmental issues.
The Environment Committee disseminates resolutions from the Technological Risk Management Committee and deliberates, among other subjects, yearly action plans and reports from the company as a whole, divisions, branches, specific offices, and subcommittees.
Also, we promote company-wide environmental preservation by establishing the Environment Management Guidelines used at branches and specific offices. These are based on technological standards designed for environmental management activities.

Environmental Auditing

Taiyo Nippon Sanso carries out internal environmental auditing in the following manner. First, an audit checklist is used for preliminary self-assessment according to the safety and environmental audit technological standards based on the Environmental Management Regulations.
Next, the Safety Audit Office uses the same list for an on-site inspection. In FY2003, 65 locations were audited in this manner, including the Taiyo Nippon Sanso group and affiliated companies, while in FY2004 the number was 33. These internal audits help clarify current situations and measures being adopted for issues such as reducing environmental burdens, legal compliance, and environmental risk.
Countermeasure plans and completion reports are required for problems uncovered by internal environmental audits in order to ensure steady progress. As of November 2005, completion percentages for these countermeasures were 99% for FY2003 audit items and 97% for FY2004 audit items.
In ISO14001 certified locations, internal environmental audits based on ISO standards are performed as well, in addition to inspections by outside inspecting organizations.

Environmental Education

We provide company-wide environmental education to raise the consciousness of our employees about environmental issues and activities. This includes group education for new employees of group or affiliated companies, at which newly hired staff gain knowledge about fundamental environmental problems and Taiyo Nippon Sanso’s approach to them. We also provide education about legal regulations and responding to emergencies as well as internal environmental auditor seminars and opportunities to attend environmental seminars at outside organizations.

Legal Compliance

Taiyo Nippon Sanso paid no penalties or fees for environmentally related infractions in either FY2003 or FY2004. Our environmental auditing function regularly monitors legal compliance in both group and affiliated companies while disseminating information about legal changes and ensuring that proper responses to these changes are enacted.

ISO14001 Certification

In addition to the steps outlined above, we are also pursuing ISO14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management. Currently three group locations (the Koyama Plant, Chubu Branch, and the Electronic Materials Division) and one affiliated company within Japan (Japan Fine Products) have been certified. In FY2005, the Nissan Tanaka Corporation and Kansai Saangas will be certified, while in FY2006, Taiyo Nippon Sanso as a whole is scheduled to gain certification.
